Learning how to walk in heels for men is a journey to say the least.Â
But with enough practice and the perfect pair, walking in heels can feel like second nature.
Take me for example, I’ve been wearing heels for almost three years…but it took me a whole twenty to gain the confidence to do it.
Now look…
I’m not saying that it’ll take you twenty years to learn how to walk in those new pair of heels you bought yesterday, but you’ll definitely need a quality set of ankles to get you through the tough times.
As a heel-loving guy, I’ve made it my mission to provide motivational and educational content that helps you learn how to wak in heels comfortably!Â

Table of Contents
1. Get The Right Pair Of Heels
Â
And what if your current pair of heels are a tad too big and you slide like the water park with each step?Â
The only valid solution is to get the most fitting pair of heels for your feet from the start.
Next, find your perfect pair of heels to start walking in!
1. Be Realistic!
It’s likely that you’re new to wearing heels, this is why you should consider the pros and cons to purchasing a pair before checking out.
You should ask yourself questions like…
“Will I seriously wear these heels in public?”
“Who will I be trying to impress with these?”
“Are these too high for me to start out?”
As you can see, these are introspective questions.Â
Along my journey I’ve had to ‘dig deep’ and get realistic about my heel purchasing decisions.
If you aren’t transparent with yourself about why learning how to walk in heels matters to you, insecurity is bound to invade your mental space when stepping out in your first pair.
2. Practice
Before walking in heels around the bar like you own the place, it’s best to practice at home first.
Now don’t get me wrong, wearing heels in public is critical for improvement, but practicing at home ensures you have a solid foundation for success.Â
Once your heels arrive, take them to an area of your home with the smoothest surface and practice walking(wooden surfaces are best, but non-shag carpets are your second-best option.)
You may have heard someone yell “heel-toe, heel-toe” at some point in your life.
This refers to your foot placement when walking at a certain pace to prevent injury.Â
When it comes to heels, this method doesn’t always work but the shoe design is a major factor.Â
For example, it’s riskier to walk in platforms with your heel guiding each step than it is with a classic pump(the elevated design can throw off your balance easier).Â
When practicing how to walk in heels for beginners at home, allow yourself to fall!Â
Take it from me, the more you fall the better you get at walking in heels.
Think about it, most people who are successful at a skill have tried and ‘failed’ at it many times.Â
Learning how to walk in heels is no different.
3. Conquor The Side Walk
Once you become more accustomed to wearing heels around the house, you can then upgrade to practicing on sidewalks.Â
Sidewalks are a boss battle because of their cracks and frequent dips/slants, but they help you become a more agile heel wearer.
When walking in heels on sidewalks, take it slow and practice on even terrain.Â
Once you’ve become better at walking on sidewalks in heels, you’re officially ready to practice at the grocery store!(I feel like a proud parent already).
4. Use Grocery Carts
Okay, this is exclusive information that I’m giving you from my high heel treasure chest of wisdom.
Take your heels to a grocery store(preferably one that doesn’t have a lot of traffic) put them on, and practice walking around while using a cart to help guide your movements.Â
You can actually see me do this in action on my YouTube channel!
This method has really helped me gain confidence when wearing heels in public because the grocery cart acts like ‘training wheels’ for your stride.
The best part about walking in heels at the grocery store is that if you stumble, the cart is there to stop your fall!
For best results, start out with walking in lower heels(3-4 inch) and gradually increase your heel heights to master various styles.
If the thought of tripping in heels with people watching is scary to you, put the heels on in a quiet area of a large market(think Walmart) and practice!
5. Exercise!
Even though this isn’t a weight loss blog, I want to briefly talk about how your fitness correlates to your ability to wear heels with ease.Â
I started my health & wellness journey in 2014(junior year of high school) after going vegan.Â
Eight years later, I can testify that your physical strength greatly impacts how you walk in heels.Â
You don’t have to be super skinny or even a body builder to master walking in heels, but having strong legs and core can only help your balance.Â
Lifting weights specifically increases your mind-muscle connection which is crucial for walking in high heels without falling!Â

5. Work With Gravity
A wise man once said that “resistance makes stronger”.Â
You can apply this philosophy to the art of walking in heels because resisting gravity strengthens your chance of falling(it wins every time, so you have to flow with it).Â
The primary reason I would fall while walking in heels is because I was trying to walk on ‘egg shells’, afraid to suddenly trip.Â
Once you start allowing gravity to guide your foot placement while walking in heels, I can guarantee your rate of falling will decrease significantly!
This is easier said than done, but walking in heels is the definition of “practice makes progress, not perfection”.
Do You Struggle With This?
Anxiety is something that you’re likely to experience when wearing heels, especially around other people.
This is why you should practice in the comfort of your own space first before stepping out, but a little anxiousness can actually help you…let me explain.Â
‘High Heel Anxiety’ is similar to stage-fright in a sense that you want to walk in the shoes good.Â
This natural bodily response can be used as fuel to keep you dedicated to consistently practice walking in heels.Â
My musical theatre instructor used to tell me that stage-fright is just your body’s way of “preparing to whoo the audience”, you must approach walking in heels with this exact mind-set!
